The importance of proofreading

A translator knows all too well that his/her job consists of three stages that must be thoroughly completed

. The first one has to do with the initial analysis of a text, where the general content must be fully understood and evaluated.

Then the process requires the actual phrase per phrase translation and, finally, the document has to be completely proofread to make sure there are no mistakes as far as spelling and grammar is concerned and that the interpretation aspect has been applied.

This last phase is as important as the concept per concept translation because here is where a manuscript will be perfected. In other words this is the process where a translation is cleaned up to an extent that the final draft will be as close to the original text as possible. And here is where the translator understands if he/she has done a fair cultural interpretation of the content.

For example, when the job requires a Spanish translation to a language that is very opposite such as German or even Japanese, the translator must be very careful when going through the final stage to make sure that the original text has been accurately expressed to the target reader or audience.

Sometimes, a client will request a second opinion when it comes to proofreading a translation. This is because of the need to have an objective review to measure the degree in which a final draft truly represents the source text.

Often, a translator works too much on a document and there comes a point where he/she develops a sort of blindness which basically means that mistakes can no longer be detected, after the person has read the text over and over again.

In any case, it is essential to put the manuscript through a professional proofreading service to gain certainty when it comes to the quality of the translation.

And if a client manages to find a translator who also has excellent proofreading skills then he must consider himself/herself very lucky.
