There are more than 2,500 varieties of corals in nature, which are distinguished in the palette of 350 colors. Originally, they are dim, but get strong glass glitter whenbeing polished; coloration can be both uniform and patchy. Corals have been a favorite decoration since ancient times. Most of all red varieties are used. These corals are splendid as final products, no wonder that beautiful houris are compared with them in the Quran. Corals are often mentioned in the Bible - they were traded with Tyre, Armenians paid the tribute to Zidon with corals and rubies (Ezekiel, XXVII, 16). Pliny the Elder wrote that in India, corals were valued equally with pearls: Indian priests attributed them to something sacred, protecting from danger. Now white corals are used as well. They are often tint to the most popular colors, or simply are put as decorations in homes in the form of coral branches.
In Europe corals are a symbol of modesty. According to legends and beliefs, they protect from poisons and witchcraft, are useful against breathlessness, forgetfulness and loss of appetite, nervous tic, and nerve attacks (if you hang a coral in a necklace on the neck of the patient). Corals give strength to a heart and reduce heart palpitations, it's the cure for grief and sadness. These semi-precious stones have long been used to treat eyes (to strengthen their shell, stops excessive tearing, give them a gloss) and teeth, headache and sore throat, liver and blood vessels, gout and ulcers of intestine.

In ancient times, they even believed that corals can protect crops from hail: for this reason, they pounded corals and mixed them with rye or tied to wooden stakes on a plow.
Ancient Romans believed that burned, pounded and dropped in water corals bring relief to those suffering from spasmodic pain intestine, in diseases of the stomach, spleen and bladder. It acts like a drug being dropped in wine or water. Ancient Greeks considered a pink coral as a symbol of immortality and happiness.
This gem is sensitive to heat, acids and hot baths, over time it turns pale and looses colors. It should be kept in a damp environment and away from heat sources. Nowadays corals are extremely popular injewelry production.
