The plot thickens with the Dianne Brimble Case

In revelations today, it appears that Dianne Brimble did not voluntarily take the drug GHB which contributed to her death. It also appears that she did not follow an Adelaide man back to his cabin on the morning she died. The story that is emerging from the inquiry is the Ms Brimble had been sexually abused by several men, There was a hearing at Balmain Local Court this morning, where the coroner Jacqueline Milledge explained her findings so far to the court. Ms Milledge had found that Ms Brimble was overcome by toxic levels of the drug GHB and alcohol.

"Dianne Brimble was unknowingly drugged by unscrupulous individuals who were intent on denigrating her for their own sexual gratification," the Coroner stated to the court. Three men been charged, convicted and sentenced in relation to the offences. However, no-one has actually been convicted of the murder of Ms Brimble. This is because it had been accepted that the drug taking was consensual as was the sexual acctivity with the men, although the coroner is not convinced that this is how the events of the night unfolded.

The coroner said that the most credible witness she had taken evidence from was given by a security guard, Peter Hawthorne. Mr Hawthorne said that he saw Mrs Brimble stagger when she left the disco shortly after 4am the morning of her death. The Coroner also said that it was wrong of the purser of the ship to allow people into where Brimble was lying because this drastically increased the possibility that evidence had been tampered with. As a result of the case, there have been a number of steps taken to reform the cruise ship industry in an attempt to ensure that the sort of behaviour which led to the death of Ms Brimble in less likely to be repeated and that the safety of passengers on cruise ships is improved as a result.
