The rarest Japanese Pokemon promo cards. How can I buy them?

How much can rare Japanese Pokemon cards can be sold for? That is the question. The answer is quite alot of money. The oldest and rarest ones will cost you several thousand dollars, but only if you are able to find them. Due to the fact that collecting Japanese Pokemon promo cards has been popular for over 10 years now, the number of cards made is in the thousands. Getting your hands on of some of the common cards is quite easy as there are many websites selling cards. But, what about the rare Pokemon cards? Some of these cards are nearly impossible to get.

There are symbols on most of the promo cards which indicate how rare they are. For example on the majority of cards, there is a small black symbol of a star, diamond or circle. The star is the rarest and the circle is the most common. In the older Japanese sets there are also cards with the same symbols but colored white and these are even harder to find due to their age. Three stars mean an ultra rare card that is usually randomly inserted into booster packs. There are also promotional cards, or promo cards as they are often called. These cards are not sold in stores and were released for special occasions such as the release of the movie, in magazines, given out at events and tournaments and so on. They are the ones that you want to collect as they are the cards that seem to go up in value.

Over the 10 plus years that Pokemon has been around, there have been nearly 30 different Japanese Pokemon sets released. They started in 1996 with the base set. It has 102 cards and is the first complete set ever produced. It contained many of the original Pokemon and also the original energy cards.

Nobody knows for sure the highest price that a Pokemon card has sold for, as most of the deals happen privately, but the highest price card that I can recall is the Japanese Pokemon Pikachu Illustrator card. It sold on eBay for a whopping $22,000 several years ago. There was another one listed for $32,500, but the auction was ended, so I'm sure it found a private buyer.

The actual price of the card really depends upon the condition of the card. The better the condition, the more money it usually will bring in. If you get your cards professionally graded, that will push the value up even more, although it is rather expensive to have a card graded. Other factors are how many cards were produced, what type of card it is (tournament, promo card, etc.) and of course the most important thing is how much someone is actually willing to buy it for.
