The right ERP Management Software can help bring out the Genius in your users - your key to profitability, maybe even survival

A few days ago I was presented a rather thought provoking question. It went something like this:

"Genius is the ability to think infinitely about a given detail." Do you agree or not agree?

I considered the question for a few seconds and quickly came to the conclusion I did not agree. First of all, it is meaningless to even think about a single detail because there is nothing in the entire universe that truly stands alone. I also do not believe that infinitely thinking about any detail would ever resolve anything either. If there is no meaningful relationship, and/or no practicality in the relationship, then thinking infinitely about it would be a colossal waste of time, therefore an act of colossal stupidity, - definitely not genius.

But, I was immediately self challenged to write my own idea of what I believed true genius to be. In a few minutes I came up with the following statement.

Genius is the ability to discern the relationships between any two or more details in hope of deriving practical application out of the nature of the relationships.

My question to you is, do you agree?

You will also note that I said "hope of having some practical application". Just because one has seriously considered all the possible relationships and nothing practical came out of it does not necessarily mean that there was not a stroke of genius - far from it. Learning what is not practical is just as important as learning what is practical.

When we have carefully assessed the relationship of one body of knowledge (a detail) with another body of knowledge (another detail) we ultimately create a third body of knowledge. This third body of knowledge may or may not have been previously proven. It may be good or it might be of no value whatsoever but even knowing that increases our storehouse of knowledge.

The true genius simply recognizes the impracticality as quickly as possible and moves on to the next opportunity in order to cut his or her losses to a minimum while also recognizing that moving on as quickly as possible also increases the probability of finding a practical, perhaps even profitable, relationships more quickly.

So, your next question probably is: "What's all this got to do with software for ERP systems?" to which I have to respond, maybe nothing, maybe lots.

If popular ERP software fails to bring out the genius in people, I believe it fails miserably because what we really need to do as businesses in our current economy is promote efficiency and productivity through exercising a never-ending onslaught of ingenuity. We certainly cannot all be geniuses of the Einstein caliber, but bear in mind, even Einstein was not capable of, nor did he even want to, have an understanding of the complexity of everything. He just picked on a few things that were of interest to him.

However, just about everyone can discern relationships between simple details, even though sometimes it may appear as hit and miss. But, key to doing so, you definitely need to have access to the details, because, as you can now see, knowing what the details are is essential to discovering relationships. Discovering relationships is the essential factor in creating ingenuity and ingenuity paves the pathway to making our lives efficient and our work environments much more productive.

If you are a bit overwhelmed, perhaps even skeptical, remember, more frequently than not, even in research labs of the highest standing and caliber, meaningful relationships are nearly always discovered where and when they were least expected.
