If your strapped for cash, then I would advise you to start with the large budget hotel chains. The big names that are always advertised on TV's will always be able to offer you the best value for money rooms.

They have great basic facilities at the cheapest prices available. The rooms will always be clean, and usually if you do have any problems with the room you are in, they will transfer you to a different room. These places always offer you great customer service

Usually these chains will have hotels everywhere in the country, so it shouldn't be difficult to find one close to where you want to stay. If you select one in the center of the city, it will be more expensive than one on the outskirts, so you can easily save money by choosing to stay on the outskirts.

If you have a large budget, then your best bet will be to search online for upmarket hotels. Again you can save money by staying in hotels on the edges of the city rather than in the middle, and as you are paying a lot for your room, you can expect a great quality room, and great customer service.

There are obviously a few tips I can give you that will make finding the ideal room a lot easier, and these tips can be applied however much money you are willing to spend.

My first tip is to check reviews of the best hotels you can find for your money. You can see what other people who have stayed in these hotels opinions are, and if they enjoyed their stay or not. You can usually see patterns in what is good about the hotels, and what is bad about them, just from looking at a few reviews.

Second of my tips is to compare what similar hotels offer you for the prices they charge. If you find that two hotels are identically priced, and have the same ratings and facilities apart from one has a swimming pool you can use, it may be worth choosing the one with the extra's, and get your monies worth!
