The temple of Artemis is recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of the olden world. It was constructed in the region of Ephesus on a leveled area which has over the centuries bowed into a swamp. Nowadays one can only see the remains of the base of this wonderful and amazing construction of the Hellenistic Age, completely constructed out of marble and filled of sculptured pieces, capital and shaft. The most attractive remains of this temple are nowadays displayed in the London British Museum. The oldest remains found date back till the 6th century BC. It was enclosed by 36 huge columns, afterward enlarged upon the commands of the Lydia King, Kreisos, in the 6th century BC. Most of the remains displayed in the London British Museum fit in to this period. The original Artemis has been reconstructed in the 2nd century BC. Positioned on top of the preceding one, it had marvelous size: 127 columns of each 17,5 meters far above the ground. Regrettably this one has also been damaged by fire, rebuilt and again knocked down by earthquakes, reconstructed and at last plundered by Goths a year later.
Mythological Information
Artemis was known as Cynthia, from her native place, Mount Cynthus in Delos. She was Apollo's look-alike sister, daughter of Zeus and Leto. She was the daughter of goddesses of Olympus: She was the woman of untamed Things, Huntsman and chief to the gods, a strange post for a woman. She would love hunting her much loved animal that was the stag, for the reason that its quickness gave the most excellent chance for her technique of capturing, that was by her silver bow and arrows and pace of foot.
She was prayed like a Godess in Athens, Corinth, and Thebes as women of stern rearing, of superior fame, of honest mind, and of receptivity in the relationships of common life. She followed and ablazed her arrows at all wild and unrestricted creature.
At Ephesus, where her huge temple was one of the Seven Wonders of the World, Artemis was presented with a fresco crown, with a disc at the back the crown; on her breast, a festoon of flowers, as a symbol of her power in spring time. Lions hang to her arms; as mother of wild beasts, she has many breasts; her legs are strongly bandaged and decorated with bulls, stags, lions, and griffins; at the both sides are flowers and bees. These statues may have been similar to the original picture of the goddess which had come from heaven.About the Author:
