The top towns to visit on your Devon holiday

Devon offers the perfect holiday destination with all that it has to offer. With a host of interesting towns and villages, there is much to do and see in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty'. A holiday in this area will encompass a range of experiences, from shopping to lying down on the beach, sports and activities to nature appreciation and cultural exploration to an exciting night out. The lovely county of Devon comprises of many interesting cities and towns, some of which are highlighted below.

Exeter This is the ceremonial county of Devon and contains many notable religious buildings such as the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and St Mary Steps and other secular buildings such as the ruins of Rougemont Castle and the oldest municipal building in England still in use The Guildhall.

Plymouth This city lies on the coast and has ferry links to France and Spain and an airport with European services. The Royal Citadel is one of the famous spots to visit here, and guided tours are available in the summer months. The National Marine Aquarium, England's biggest aquarium is located here, and houses over 400 species of underwater creatures.

Torbay This is an east facing bay and natural harbour, roughly situated between the cities of Exeter and Plymouth. It is now called the English Riviera, as it boasts a mild climate and gorgeous beaches, something that is very popular with holiday makers.

Totnes This is a dainty market town situated at the head of the estuary of the River Dart. It is a thriving centre for art, music, theatre and natural health and is known as a place where one can live a bohemian' lifestyle.

Dartmouth This is a popular tourist destination set on the banks of the estuary of the River Dart and used to be of great importance as a deep water port for sailing vessels. Visit Dartmouth Castle and Kingswear Castle, which protect the narrow mouth of the Dart as well as the many other historic buildings around the town.

Torquay Located near Torbay, this fishing and agricultural town developed into a popular seaside resort in the 19th century. This town was the home of Agatha Christie, who lived most of her life there. Torquay has dedicated her life and work in the form of a tour with plaques the Agatha Christie Mile.
