The unethics Of Your Seo Agency
The current buzz around the SEO industry is whether or not the terms ethical and SEO companies should be used in conjunction.
In order to reach a determination of the validity of an ethical SEO agency it is important to first understand the meaning of the word ethical. According to dictionary.com the term ethical means:
Ethical
Adj.
1. Of, relating to, or dealing with ethics.
2. Being in accordance with the accepted principles of right and wrong that govern the conduct of a profession.
Thinking inside the box would conclude that ethics relates greatly to morality. According to the most rudimentary concept of the term morals the manipulation of outside elements is essentially wrong. Following that concept, is there any truth behind an SEO agency claiming to be ethical? Is it not, after all, the purpose of an SEO agency to manipulate search engines into assuming that certain websites are better than others?
That is not to imply that there is anything erroneous about an SEO harnessing their skills to enhance their clients search engine rank, however, these services should not be referred to as ethical.
The majority of
SEO companies claiming to be ethical in their approach only do so in an attempt to increase their bottom line. It is not uncommon for businesses in any industry to attempt to sway prospective clients by suggesting that their competitors are less than capable of meeting their unique needs and requirements. An
SEO agency using this approach may lead their prospective clients to believe that all other SEO firms utilize unethical tactics which will pose detrimental effects on their SEO initiatives.
Now back to the original question, Why should the terms ethical and SEO companies not be used in conjunction?
1. It is the purpose of an SEO agency to manipulate the algorithms of a search engine and any form of manipulation can be deemed unethical.
2. The use of the term ethical is misleading to potential consumers. The simple suggestion the an SEO firm is ethical implies that all other SEO firms are unethical and therefore incapable of delivering satisfactory results. It is important to remember that ALL SEO companies offer and provide the same services, how can one firm be continued ethical and another not when they do the exact same thing?
3. There really is no place for ethics in search engine optimization. It is the main goal of an SEO to assist their clients in achieving front page rank and drive traffic while bolstering the websites visibility. In order to achieve this each website must be altered, using unethical elements, to appear favorably to the search engines.
