The value of Integrity

The value of Integrity
I began writing one night after being unable to sleep, frustrated with my ex, my boss, and trying to find clarity. I saved this excerpt from my life to later reflect and possibly share.
" At the age of two Tyler was asked his name one day while waiting for his sister to get on the bus, he pointed to himself and replied "Me Bubba". The whole neighborhood called him "Bubba" from that day forward. Satin is the person who donned her brother with this nickname when she was four. Satin is my daughter she had a slight speech impediment, she had innocently turned "brother" into "Bubba, in turn, I donned her Sissy. His father hated the nickname even though it was my constant endearment for our son. My husband tried unsuccessfully to change the nickname by calling him "Tyler Bear" or just "Bear" since he was the only one who ever used that nickname it didn't catch on. After our divorce he even asked me to stop calling our son "Bubba". I explained that "Bubba'' meant brother and I would not do so, we also call Satin "Sissy" and this is what they call each other by to this day.
I'm writing this at 1:46 am on Wednesday December 15th 2010. In my head I hear Freddy saying " Today is Wednesday December 15th 2000 and ten" who is Freddy? He is a special needs child I work with, as an instructor in the capacity of a Para-educator at an Elementary school. I work with kids that need extra help, I'm good at it and I have the patience it requires. Plus I care about them, but I rarely tell them that, I don't have to tell them, they already know. Freddy likes to say the date he likes to stand up in front of everyone and put himself on display, he loves to have the attention of the class. I love the delight children like Freddy take in life. "
Flashing forward, doing the right thing is not always the most profitable. This is what I discovered after losing my second job, following my complaints to administration regarding abuse. The first job I lost because I decided to stick up for myself, and not allow a supervisor to degrade and intimidate me. The second job I lost due to my decision to report a supervisor for degrading and intimidating a child.
Unfortunately in a "he said she said " situation the subordinate is rarely listened to. I believe in the long run the people who use their position or status to abuse will "reap what they sow". It still saddens me to know they get away with it so often.
I am enrolled in college again at the age of 35, to finish my education and hopefully pursue a long career in the educational field. A very broad statement about my future "employment" I suppose because, I'm not sure in where my values will be most appreciated. I may decide to go into a field that has the capacity to hold people accountable for abuse. Abuse comes in many forms, and is always somehow hard to prove. Knowing all we do today, regarding psychology and social issues, it should be easier to identify abusers and stop them before it's too late. I challenge you the reader, to reflect in life, and draw upon your own integrity when faced with abuse.
