Google and the other search engines want to see that our webpage's are relevant to the keyword being searched. Google is getting smarter every day, gone are the days of just stuffing a keyword or phrase and getting ranked.

Popular websites get better treatment from Google and the other search providers. New websites are in the middle of the internet ocean with no way to find them. How will it be found? How will the search engines position such a site? On page 100 of the search results maybe? Its possible that your site won't even get indexed. The solution is free backlinks. These are links from other websites that point to yours. Normally each link back to your webpage's will count as a vote of popularity, the more votes you have, the more Google likes your site and generally the higher you will be indexed. It's simple, page 1 listing equals more traffic and more money!

The problem comes though when you try and get these links from other site owners. Why would they? Usually you need some sort of incentive, maybe a link back to their site. Plus it will take a fair amount of time to contact website owners and asking if they will link to your webpage's.
