There Are Many Interesting Activities For Elderly People

When we think about activities for elderly people

, the main things which come to mind are gardening, reading and knitting. However, there are so many other activities elderly people can enjoy and they are all beneficial to both their mind and body. Activities for elderly persons are essential because as we get older, our minds as well as our bodies slow down and if we do not try to keep both of them active, we can find ourselves in a sorry state.

Purpose of activities for elderly people:

Engage the mind and body in activities to keep both occupied and active

Promote social interaction among peers and younger people

Build self confidence and self reliance

Pass the time in a creative and productive manner

Build a sense of belong to the community

Giving elderly people the chance to make choices and decisions

The best way to arrange activities for elderly people is to listen to them and get an understanding of what they actually enjoy and may wish to do. For many people, this is the time when they can learn a musical instrument, or a new language. Some elderly people may not wish to live in a home but they still activities to keep them busy. For these, there are things such as book clubs, writing clubs and for the more active, there are walking clubs.

Activities for elderly people:

Arts and crafts activities- either practicing or learning new skills

Sensory therapy

Stories and poetry- both reading and writing

Gardening clubs and learning about horticulture

Dementia activities

Exercise and fitness classes

Musical activities- listening and playing

One of the things we need to remember is that something which is ordinary for younger people can be new and interesting for an elderly person. For example the gadgets which we take for granted such as digital cameras and iPhones can be an opportunity for an older person to learn something new and to enjoy playing around with. In the same manner, these days, there are many elderly people who are learning all about the internet and how to use computers. I know of many elderly people, my parents included, who now regularly use laptops and iPads for things such as keeping in touch with children and grandchildren and even for online shopping.

There is no reason to assume that just because a person is no longer able to work and earn an income, that they should not be given respect and treated with dignity. In fact we need to give them a lot of care and attention as well as respect as a way of appreciating all that they have done for us. This is why we need to ensure that we try to come up with new and interesting

activities for elderly people to enjoy. They have worked hard all their lives and it is up to their families to ensure that they spend their last years in comfort.
