There were very noticeable in the world of crafts and needlework events - exhibitions and festivals
, shows and tournaments, etc in various countries from spring 2009 to spring 2010. Some of them we were lucky enough to visit, some of the information we received from participants or from publications. There is a quick overview below of the most visible (in our opinion) events held last year.
Handarbeit &Hobby Exhibition (Cologne, Germany)
In the spring of 2009 in Cologne (Germany) has taken place the next exhibition Handarbeit &Hobby - in our opinion the largest European exhibition of manufacturers of the goods for needlework and creativity. More than 200 producer companies, among which were not only the European companies, but also the companies from Mexico, Japan, Australia, the USA and other countries have presented their production. The "OXIMA" Company was at this exhibition the unique Israeli company and has presented to retailers the sets for embroidery. The exhibition held a variety of events: master classes, show, presentations. Among especially remembered it is possible to allocate 4th championship on the high-speed knitting, organized by Miriam Tegels, From a fabric to a yarn presentation from Handspinngilde Eigetragener verein, Schoopel Wolle Felting with a paper presentation, and also experiences with a color, presented in textile projects of designer Gisela Meyer-Hahn.
In the exhibition frame has taken place a big fashion-trend of show which has presented the participant new tendencies in "handicraft" fashion. International School for Textile Arts has presented its vision of monochrome embroidery, and Patchwork Gilde Deutschland Eigetragener verein has presented "mathematical" quilts.
World blacksmithing championship in Canada.
Every year the best blacksmithing representatives in the world come together to show their skill before thousands of spectators and choose the best of the best. Among public the championship is more known as the Olympic Games of smiths.
From the 1st to the 5th July, 2009 in Calgary (Canada) the 30th, anniversary, World Championship of Blacksmithing has taken place. This championship is considered one of the most prestigious in the world in its field. To the place of championship 6 tons of coal and 1300 foots of a steel have been delivered, and the prize fund amounted to 35 thousand dollars. Probably, not the greatest money, but a victory prestige is more expensive. By the way, this championship is democratic enough concerning participants this year among them there was even a woman.
In a semi-final there were ten persons from whom 6 persons represented Great Britain, three the USA and one smith was from Canada. Therefore it is no wonder that finally Englishmen became both the world champion and the vice-world champion. They really this year were out of competition.
The championship was won by Stephen Bing, and the vice-champion became Darren Bazin. .
The Hand&Lock award.
Hand&Lock has presented winners of 2009 of one of the most prestigious awards Hand&Lock in category "Embroidery". At first 24 finalists from 24 countries have been selected from 330 applicants, winners have been chosen from finalists. This year for the first time in competition history France representative - Lucy Borough became the winner. The second place was awarded to Rene Lindell from Great Britain, and the third place has got Yumiko Komai from Japan. The monetary prize for this competition victory was 10 000$. There were Madeira prize and the Australian award except the basic awards, and also Svarovski prize has been awarded.

The Open European Quilt championship.
From April 30 to May 3, 2009 in the Netherlands the next European quilting championship has taken place. This championship is held annually, since 2002. "The Magic" became a theme of this championship; therefore all participants should display in their quilts this theme. Three judges evaluated works: Claudia Pfejl (Germany), Leah Flemings (Belgium) and Johan Wolfroum (USA).
As part of the championship there are were shows and workshops, for example, about the use of quilting organza, on machine quilting, French quilt master class for beginners.
Sabine Schroeder from Germany has won the main prize of the year championship with her work called In shades (In the Shadows). Really there is something magic in this quilt a delicate work with color; the magnificent execution technique has made this work an absolute favorite of the championship.
