The only city in the world to have been decorated in honour of its bravery in the face of an enemy, Warsaw has been extensively rebuilt following the havoc wreaked by Nazi Germany following its invasion in 1939. That bombardment resulted in 80 per cent of the city's buildings being destroyed and makes its subsequent transformation following the war and its transition from communism to democracy one of the most remarkable stories in world history.

In the light of such stoical resistance, it is little wonder that the city has chosen as its motto the phrase Semper invicta', which translates into English as always undefeated'. While the skyline of modern Warsaw is nowhere near as distinctive as it once was, thanks to the efforts of the Luftwaffe, there are still remnants of its Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neo-classical past, all of which have made Warsaw a magnet for foreign visitors.

At the end of the Second World War, the devastated city's population had shrunk to around 400,000. But it has been growing ever since then, and today stands at more than 1.7million. In order to meet the demands of this vastly increased population, the city's infrastructure has undergone substantial improvement and extension. The Frederic Chopin International Airport is by far the biggest air terminal in Poland. As well as receiving cargo from all other major Polish airports, there are regular flights to and from Germany, France, Russia, and even South Korea and China.

Road transport into the city is hampered by the fact that the city has no complete orbital motorway, but trams, metro and regional rail services feed right into the city centre, and link it extensively with every part of the city's suburbs. Warsaw's economy has been transformed by the massive investment which has taken place over the past two decades, which was the greatest of any city in central Europe. It grew by more than six per cent per year in both 2007 and 2008.

Especially prominent are the city's electronics and high-tech industries, while their success has been matched by that of its food processing industry. Of the many which existing during the Communist era, only one major steelworks remains, as the city has transformed its economy into one fit for the 21st century. This has been a major reason why many young Poles who fled the country following the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of communism have decided to return home. For those who have stayed in the West, there is the reassurance that they can use reliable and efficient international courier services to stay in touch with their friends and family.

Whenever you need to send a parcel to Warsaw, there is a wide variety of resources available online to help you find the most suitable and best value international delivery service.
