There won't be complete replacement of notebook

There won't be complete replacement of notebook

What was your association with Thinkpad?

When I joined IBM in 1974 there were no PCs only what were called terminals and bunking systems. The terminals could not handle double-byte characters such as Chinese and Japanese. I helped to develop a standard worldwide PC that was capable of understanding oriental languages.

To do that, the team had to learn PC design. In 1990, we developed the first battery-powered laptop almost at the same time as Toshiba . There was no industry standard on how to make battery-powered notebooks, so a lot of investment was required to come up with a unique design and architecture. Only big companies could afford HP laptop battery.

The first battery-powered laptop IBM released was L-40SX. It was white, not black like today's Thinkpad. Then we used the services of a German industrial designer in Italy, and based on his design, introduced the black and boxy product in 1992 that was the first Thinkpad.

Is the Father of Thinkpad a formal title or is it something you just came to be known by?

It was never my formal title, it came to me unofficially. And (jokingly) I am probably no longer father, I am grandfather. I have many next-generation fathers and mothers in my group. I do not own the Thinkpad I just led the first small group that created the Thinkpad.

In 1988, when the Japan team released the first portable PC that looked like a sewing machine and ran on AC power, I was not part of it. I was in New York, helping executives in the PC department of IBM. I was called back to the team because it had got the mission to develop the portable, battery powered PC.

Is Thinkpad still special for you?

Not just me but most of the key people. Most of the people in the team are still with me. The generation following that also feels very proud of developing it and has a strong ownership towards it.

When we moved from IBM to Lenovo, we said, "When we joined the company, the IBM name was already there it's about 70-years old but Thinkpad is a name we created. So as long we as can move to Lenovo with this logo, we're happy. We were happy to carry this name to the new company.

After having worked with IBM since 1974, how different is it working with Lenovo? How different is the organisation culture? IBM laptop battery.

The Lenovo culture for some reason is very similar to IBM, may be because they were dealing with IBM products in China even before the acquisition. At first, we were scared when we moved. But surprisingly, we soon found there were more commonalties than differences.

Process-wise it is similar, it is about what product you are going to develop, how you are going to do it, etc. And fundamentally, before you say you are Chinese, Indian, Japanese or American, you have another category that is common you are engineers. And all engineers want to make something impossible, technically possible.

With nifty new devices such as smartphones and iPads is the notebook nearing retirement?

Some people say, I have an iPad or a smartphone, soon these things will replace the notebook. I don't think so. I don't think there will be a complete replacement of the notebook . Whenever people in my team have an idea for a new device or form factor, I tell them to try it for two weeks.

They need to be satisfied with only that device at least for two weeks, and not use anything else. If they still need to carry the notebook or something else for full functionality they are only adding more weight to what they carry. Perhaps, it could be another type of device for a different use but not a replacement apple laptop battery.

What are the innovations to the notebook you are working on?

You need to eliminate some of the pain points. When you use notebooks you still have to worry about whether they have enough charge, if you are carrying the AC adapter, if there is a charging point, etc. You can also never forget that you've a laptop in the bag because of the weight. Of course, we have 12-inch laptops that are lighter, but its screen is small. Long battery life and thinner, lighter form factor without compromising function and speed is what we are working on.
