They Didn't Teach You in University How to Find a Job Fast

Is getting a good education the key to a successful career

? Your grandparents taught your parents that this was the way to go, and in turn, your parents instilled these same values in you. But a year before graduating from University the thought of looking for a job to jump start your career is scaring the hell out of you. You feel knots in your stomach with the realization that there has not been a single course teaching and showing university students like you how to get a job fast.

This leads to more compelling questions surrounding the present educational system. Has it been remiss in preparing students for the workforce? Are the programs offered by university career centers sufficient to help graduating students find jobs?

Education is still important. It's an integral part of your personal value. Take the example of Apple's co-founder Steve Jobs, who dropped out of Reed College barely after a semester. In his commencement address at Stanford on June 12, 2005 Jobs was quoted as saying "After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out ok."

Jobs, however, continued to drop in on classes that interested him one of which was a calligraphy class that would later on influenced the Mac's multiple typefaces. He also pursued his interest in electronics and got a technician job at Atari, a manufacturer of video games.

If you sum up Jobs' early years, you will find a college dropout who didn't have any trouble getting a job fast because he pursued and lived his passion for electronics. In fact, this passion was pursued in friendship with Steve Wozniak, Apple's co-founder, who is five years older than him. It also lead to membership in a computer club where he and Wozniak sold their first computers.

Ironically, in later years Jobs had to resign from Apple because of work relationship issues with its John Sculley, its CEO. This was in 1985, and he later returned to the company in 1995.
