They Say We Look Like Our Pets

Isn't it remarkable that we really do start to resemble our four legged friends? Not as much as puppies or kittens but as we grow older, lazier and more arthritic so do they. What else do we do as we get older, lazier and handicapped by sore joints or hip dysplasia in animals?

Please, do we really need to ask that question when we can't bend over to tie our shoe laces or for that matter even see our shoes. Probably if asked what we eat on a daily basis somewhere in there we would have to say salty snacks or something loaded with sugar. Bad, bad, bad and what does that furry creature at your feet get? I bet something salty or sweet?

How about leftovers if we have any, I'm guessing we don't want to waste it so let's give it to Fido, great, now who's getting fat and lazy and looking like there owner.

Let's talk about the disadvantages of being overweight. We already know what happens to humans when they eat all the wrong stuff or too much of the right stuff. Let's list what happens to your pet, who's the one that doesn't know any better. You are the one feeding them, right?

Hard on their heart.

Bad for their backs.

Extremely bad for their hips especially on larger dogs.

No quality of life.

Handicapped pets have enough trouble getting around be it in a cart or just because they have arthritis or hip dysplasia. It's very hard on those animals and it's hard on you. I call it cruelty to animals, so if you have a chunky kid and a chunky pet, send them out for a walk or two every day. It doesn't have to be far, just around the block would work and cut back on the junk and portions.

The one thing that you never should do, and I learned this from experience, is tell someone that their pet is overweight. If you do say something you might want to be prepared to duck and run. People are very sensitive about their animals and take it as a personal affront to their character so try to be sensitive and still get the point across. While you're at it you might want to take a moment to look at your animals and see if you should be throwing any stones.
