First, measure the height the door needs to be. Next, you will need to measure the width at three places. The top of the entrance, the middle of the entrance, and the bottom of the entrance. The reason the width is measured in three places is that often the opening is not as square as it should ideally be. While the top and the bottom of the opening may be the exact measurement the centre may be slightly off. Having it made to only those two measurements will result in a door that does not fit or close properly.

Kind

Once you know what size you will need you must then consider the type of door you want for your shower. There are several to choose from and the kind you opt for will depend on the space you have available for opening and closing it, your own personal taste and what best fits into your bathroom's decor. You can choose from the following types of glass shower doors: sliding, pivot, bi-fold, curved, frameless, framed and semi-framed.

Style

Once you determine the type you want, the next step is choosing the style that you find most appealing. This may include clear or frosted glass, etched or stained glass or something even more original. Like the kind of shower door you choose, the style depends a great deal on your personal taste and the decor of your bathroom.

Self Installed or Professionally Installed

Another important consideration you will need to make when deciding to install your shower door is whether to have it professionally installed or to install it yourself. While installing it yourself can save you a bundle of money it may not be the best choice for everyone.

If there is any doubt in your mind about whether you can install it properly and have it leak proof then perhaps the extra money you pay for a professional installation will be well spent. Not everyone is confident working with glass and some knowledge and skill is required, as well as the right tools for the job. If it is being fitted for you, they may also take the measurements beforehand, so you can be sure that it will fit correctly.
