Things To Do When Spending Christmas In Amsterdam
Spending the holiday season in Amsterdam is a great way to explore the unique things the area has to offer that are specific to the time of year.
While there are surely plenty of things to explore any time of year when visiting the area, you can rest assured that there are many more that are found only around Christmas time. If you plan to spend the holidays in Amsterdam, don't miss out on the following attractions.
Christmas Plays: The Nutcracker is an extremely popular show put on each year in Amsterdam, usually throughout the entire month of December. This makes it easy to catch whether you happen to be in town before or after Christmas day.
And while it's true that you can probably find numerous Christmas plays and shows near your own home, you won't see a show quite like one that is put on in Amsterdam.
Christmas Concerts: You will want to be sure and make your way to the Great Hall on Christmas Eve, which is well known for it's free winter concert that's put on each and every year. You can expect to hear many of your favorite Christmas classics.
And if you so choose, you can spend Christmas day at the concert hall listening to pieces by Beethoven being performed by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
Enjoy the Winterparade: Located in the Westpark neighborhood, Winterparade is a slightly less traditional way to spend the holidays. You can join in the festivities on any day from December 18th through the 29th, and you can expect to marvel in comedy, cartoons, floats, dances, film, music and great food.
There are numerous restaurants and other venues in the area so you can easily spend an entire day here.
Christmas at the Museums: Many of Amsterdam's museums put together special displays just for the holiday season so it's a good idea to make a day of checking as many as you can out.
From fantastic decorated Christmas trees to full blown displays, there are many different ideas brought to life throughout the month of December. Artwork done by children and adults alike really help to bring out the holiday cheer throughout the city.
Amsterdam is truly a magical place to spend the holidays, and as you can see there is no shortage of seasonal things to keep yourself occupied with. The great part is that you can mix and match all of the seasonal attractions with the year round variety that you are no doubt interested in exploring while visiting the area.
You don't have to worry about the place feeling "shut down" just because it's Christmas. In fact you will probably come to find that it's quite the opposite once you are there!
