Things To Know About Dentures

If you find yourself needing dentures you probably have the same questions as most people

. How much will it cost, and how many office visits will you need to complete them? The cost will vary as will the number of visits. I can't tell you the cost because each dentist will have their own fee. The average person needs five to ten visits. Some patients need ten because of tooth extractions, and getting the proper fit is essential for comfort.

People use these prosthetic teeth for many reasons. They help improve the sunken look that develops from tooth loss, and they support the lips and cheeks. They provide for a more typical appearance. They also help with word pronunciation and allow patients to eat some of their favorite foods that require teeth. They still do not compare to your natural teeth. They allow for about ten percent chewing power. Most importantly they can improve self- esteem. Patients might have partial or full dentures. Partial means that they only need certain teeth made and they will fit around existing teeth. Full means they wear them along the top or the bottom to replace all the teeth.

One of the biggest reasons a patient doesn't wear the prosthetic teeth they had made is because of discomfort. If you are having discomfort you should go back to your dentist. Sadly most patients won't. It is helpful to use someone proficient in making and properly fitting them. Improper fit may cause sores in the mouth. In some cases a patient may have lost so much bone in the jaw that this is not an option for them. If there are other options your dentist will discuss them with you.

Caring for prosthetic teeth is not much different. Plaque can still build up. There are over the counter cleaning solutions, soaks for overnight and special toothpastes. Your dentist will still want to see you annually for an oral cancer and proper fit check. They may suggest periodic imaging to check for bone loss. While there they will check your prosthetic teeth for wear. As they wear they will become shorter. After about ten to twelve years, you will need to replace even well maintained dentures. If you wait too long it can become hard to adjust to newer ones as the old ones will have become so thin, newer ones will feel so bulky. Protect your investment and it will work the best for you. Seek help if you think they are not fitting well. Keep in mind that your dental health tells the world about your overall health. Keeping up with your oral care puts you in a good position to catch problems while they are small.
