Things To See & Do In Canterbury, Kent

. One of the primary reasons for this incredible reputation is the very good checklist containing a large quantity of top class attractions and engaging cities steeped in history. The history of England is full of important events which have affected on all of us as not too long ago many countries of the world where members of the British Empire. As the British Empire expanded increasing numbers of missionaries spread the Christian faith. Religion has helped shape Great Britain and one place which has played a role in this is the city of Canterbury.

Canterbury Attractions

The city of Canterbury is a medieval community in Kent positioned along the banks of the River Stour. This intensely picturesque city is the nation's ecclesiastical capital and it has been for a great many years. Because of this fact the city features a large number of prestigious ecclesiastical structures, the finest being Canterbury Cathedral.

Canterbury Cathedral is most famous for being the place where Becket was murdered but the cathedral was founded in A.D. 597 and has an eventful and long past. Shortly after Becket's death many miracles were said to have taken place and a shrine was constructed which soon became a place of pilgrimage. Sadly it is impossible to see the shrine because Henry VIII had it destroyed but Canterbury Cathedral remains a place of pilgrimage for large numbers of folk.

The town's most visited museum is The Canterbury Tales. It shows, through medieval tableaux, the pilgrimages of Chaucerian England. Geoffrey Chaucer wrote the immensely popular Canterbury Tales which tells the story of five pilgrimages. Audiovisual aids are used to bring these tales to life over 45 minutes.

The Museum of Canterbury (formerly known as The Canterbury Heritage Museum) is another well visited museum. Situated in the ancient Poor Priest's Hospital this fascinating museum exhibits the history of the town. Using state-of-the-art technology such as computers, including hologram technology, the museum covers periods ranging from the Vikings to the Blitz.

The Roman Museum is an unusual museum for the fact that it is below street level. Utilising real archaeological excavations the museum uses interactive computers to bring the Roman era to life. This is a chance to see a Roman house with mosaics.

Of course the town features many other tourist attractions, simply too many to describe here. The nightlife alone would merit another article. Above I only introduce a handful however I would hope that this has generated a fascination with the town and possibly you would consider having a vacation there soon.
