Things You Might Not Know About Babies

Kids get bigger faster than anybody realizes

Kids get bigger faster than anybody realizes. In the beginning an infant is a single celled organism and within a very short time it is a living being with a heart, lungs and a brain. In just forty short weeks they go from those few cells to living creatures who are able to live on their own. Personalities and decisions begin being made almost immediately after birth. Things like moving on their own, needing help with diaper changes and even how they learn to speak are pretty commonly understood. Here are some facts about babies and childhood development that you might not know.

Did you know that babies are not good at perceiving the differences in colors very well? It will take some time after a baby is born for his eyes to finish maturing and for the synapses between them and his brain to be complete. This is why rooms painted in primary colors and toys painted or made of primary colored fabric are usually better received by babies. Bold reds, blues, greens and even black and white are best for babies. Pastels are better for adult eyes. This is why a baby will sometimes choose one toy instead of another. This means that all of those black and white decorations that you scoff at (for various reasons) are actually better for your baby's eyes than the pastel and soft colored decorations you were planning to use.

Babies are able to recognize music while they are still in the womb. By the thirty fourth week of development in the womb a baby can hear and identify songs. A baby can spend more than a month in utero listening to and appreciating different songs. Some women say that they will sometimes feel their babies moving to the rhythm of some music. Your baby has definite tastes and preferences even before he is born! Isn't that amazing?

You already know that babies cry when they need something but did you know that those cries do not involve tears until two or three weeks after the baby's birth? Tears contain stress induced hormones. To calm itself down, the body tries to get rid of the stress induced hormones and forces the tears out of the tear ducts (aka crying). This hormone is not one that gets created while the baby is in the womb. Some babies won't start to cry real tears until they are a few weeks old. Still other babies can take up to a few months to show signs of actual tears (remember, every baby is different).

If you want to learn more about babies there are plenty of little known facts that you can choose from. You already know how fast babies grow up. Do you know the details of child development? Do you know all of the neat things that happen between conception and adulthood? Learning about babies never gets boring, just look at the interesting things you know now that you did not know a little while ago.
