Things You Must Know When Managing Your Three Year Old's Irritability

What are tantrums? To achieve a better description, visualize the last time you wanted to watch a movie but no matter how hard you try to open your player, it becomes more and more frustrating. The last thing you know is that you are throwing your remote control and the player's manual all over the place. What's worse is you're blaming others for something that they should not be accounted for. That is popularly known as the adult side of tantrum.

Irritability are very common to children and like most adults, they too diverge in temperaments. The episodes differ as well, some experience it regularly while some rarely. Tantrum is brought about by extreme frustration and distress. You can tell if your child is having bad temper when he or she is wailing inconsolably and is hitting and throwing clothes around. Kids throw tantrums because of hunger, sleepiness or exasperation and they want to get their parent's attention.

Initially, parents or a significant other reaction is to discipline the child. What you think is right is actually not the best thing to do. According to several research on child behavior, ignoring the tantrums is the way to solve the problem. It will help children learn how to control self and emotions. However, not all children may be able to express their feelings and control their emotions. Following are suggestions on how to deal with tantrums effectively.

Know What Triggers the Problem

Do not expect children to speak what they want to say or say what they feel. Imagine how frustrating it is when someone needs attention and not able to communicate what their needs are. Parents should know the behavior patterns of their children. As much as possible avoid situations that can lead into tantrums.

Act Like an Adult and Do Not Argue

If a parent tries to deal tantrums by quarreling with a toddler, they are in for a long fight. Toddler think immaturely. No matter how a parent tries to explain things or points out they are right, the kid would just ignore it. At times toddlers are not mature enough to understand their parents are trying to tell them. Toddlers understand better through their parents actions. Certainly arguing with a young child is childish, so might as well act like an adult.

Simply Ignore Outburst

Outburst triggers when a child fails to get what he or she requires. Sometimes it is effective to just ignore them. It is ideal to let your child understand that throwing a tantrum is not a way to get what he or she requires. It is not advantageous if toddlers would be habituated to throw tantrums whenever they do not get what they want, it will make their irritability carry on and things can really turn ugly.

Provide Toddlers with Choices

Let the toddlers discover how to decide on what is right for them. Let them experience they have a free will. This will give them a little self control and keep bad temper from developing.

When toddlers fail to get what they want it would be best to provide alternatives. Akin to if they are not allowed to drink soda and they got angered, offer them alternative drinks such as juice or milkshakes.

Divert their Attention

Diversion is a great way to refocus your child's attention to a less threatening object or situations. This is usually effective because toddlers immediately forget their anger, failure and frustration. Take advantage of their short attention span.

Dispense your child his or her favorite toy or if it is still early you might want to turn the tv to capture his or her attention. Every now and then get their favorite dress and let them wear it. Dress them along with their favorite accessories. This is very fun most outstandingly for little girls. Show them old attire and pretend clothes can occasionally help.

Tantrums can happen to adults and kids alike. Outburst is a natural countenance of a child in response to their frustrations or failures. Instead of joining the circus, focus on how to figure out the cause of tantrums, disciplining and diverting their attention. It is also expedient to know not just the behavioral patters of a child but their interests as well.
