Things You must know about Juvenile Diabetes

Things You must know about Juvenile Diabetes

I am a Parent of a child that was newly Diagnosed with Diabetes. This condition is complicated but can be managed. I have learned that children all over the world are diagnosed with Diabetes every day and they do not know the cause of this condition.

My child was diagnosed in March 2010, she lost about 25lbs and was not eating, sluggish, emotional, sensitive, blurred vision, hard of hearing and unfocused in school and frequent urination. I really did not know what why she was like this. One day we went on a road trip and she had to use the restroom and she went in my car. Of course I was upset for a minute but I knew my child had not done this before.

I took her to the Doctors and told her Pediatrician all the symptoms she was having. So the Doctor took some blood from her and called us the next day and said my child's blood sugar was 500 (whoa). I immediately rushed her to the hospital and her blood sugar went up higher to 750 ( shaking my head). My child was put on insulin immediately. The emergency room staff explained to me that my child should have come in a coma, because blood sugar that high the cells in her body were starving for nutrients.

Thank God we caught it before she went into a coma. ( I would have been a mess ).

Now we have learned what we need to know about the condition and we are managing it. We go to support groups and we see the Endocrinologist monthly. Let me tell you a little bit about what we have learned so far.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a health condition where the body either does not produce enough or any insulin - or the cells ignore the insulin. Insulin's crucial role is to regulate the level of glucose (blood sugar) in our bodies.

When the body doesn't have enough insulin, the sugar in the blood cannot get into the cells for energy.

Juvenile Diabetes Facts

Juvenile diabetes is when the body's immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Experts believe that genetic factors play a role in this. However, it is also possible that this may be a result from an immune system response after a viral infection.

Juvenile diabetes symptoms

-Frequent urination

-Excessive thirst

-Extreme hunger

-Unusual weight loss

-Increased fatigue

-Irritability

-Blurry vision

-Recurring infections

-Tingling or numbness in hands or feet

-Slow to heal wounds

Hypoglycemia is when the blood sugar is low and the child feels weak and sluggish, shaky, thirsty, emotional, and sensitive. Blood sugar below 70 is considered to be hypoglycemic. To treat this you must give the child one piece of candy (prefer soft candy) or 8 oz of juice and then wait 15 minutes and check the childs sugar. Giving the child candy will increase the blood sugar to normal rates. The blood sugar should go up to 90-130.

Hyperglycemic is when the sugar is high and the child feels thirsty, lazy, unfocused, can loose maximum amounts of weight, headaches, irritable, and sluggish and constant urination. Blood sugar higher than 150 is considered to be hyperglycemic. To treat this the child either has to get the appropriate amount of insulin and drink 16-24oz of water. If the child blood sugar 200-800 they must check for keytones in the urine and drink 24-48 oz of water.

Keytones in the urine is when the fat breaks down to give the child energy and the urine becomes acidic. Ketoacidosis is a serious condition where the body has dangerously high levels of ketones, which can lead to diabetic coma or even death.

Beware of these signs there are so many children that have it and don't know. Get your child checked out by the Doctor for Diabetes today.
