Things to Know about Freeview

Considering the recent media campaign it is likely that you are aware of the digital switch-over

, that is if you haven't switched over already but what does this mean for the way we watch TV in this country, and what exactly do you need to do to make the change to a digital service like Freeview?

Unfortunately the digital switch-over isn't really an opt in or opt out kind of thing, and from 2008 to 2012 the now outmoded analogue TV signal will be turned off this means that in the future if you want to watch your favourite channels then you'll need a digital set top box, in fact in some parts of the country this has already happened, whereas in others the analogue signal has begun to diminish.

Luckily, whilst there are subscription only set boxes that offer a great wealth of output, there are also free options such as the Freeview service. Admittedly this isn't an entirely free solution, as you will need to pay for a set top box, as well as a digital aerial if you want to bolster the digital signal. As there is competition amongst set top boxes, however, the prices look set to decrease, and even now Freeview boxes are available that will only set you back around 25.

Whilst digital set top boxes are a new technology they are built to be compatible with old TVs etc and therefore when you purchase a set top box all you need to to is to plug it into your existing TV aerial. Of course as essentially you are still receiving an external signal the quality of your service will depend on your digital TV aerial. Whilst you can receive Freeview through an analogue aerial rather than a digital aerial you will only get the most out of your Freeview set top box if you have a digital aerial which will ensure that you get the all the channels that you should be getting and that your picture remains crisp as you watch.
