Things to Remember While Buying Swimming Pool Chemicals
It is extremely important to choose swimming pool chemicals with a lot of care because swimmers can fall very ill if the chemicals in pools combine to form dangerous compounds. Recently, firemen had to wear Level-B hazardous material suits to investigate what was wrong in a swimming area at an apartment after a person complained of breathing problems.
Chorine remains the most preferred sanitizers for swimming pools. This is because it is a powerful oxidizer. This means that it can break up the contaminants that make the water attractive to bacteria and algae. There are several forms in which chlorine can be used. A brief discussion about each of these forms may be helpful.
Bleach: This liquid form of chlorine is almost like the bleach that is used for laundry. The only difference is that the varieties used for laundry are less concentrated. However, this is not the best option because bleach tends to increase the pH of the pool and this has to be decreased by adding pH reducers. Moreover, other means of introducing the oxidizing agent into water bodies can deliver from 55 to 90 percent chlorine. Thus those forms are better than chlorine, which delivers only 10 percent.
Calcium Hypochlorite: This is popularly known as Cal Hypo. Usually this swimming pool chemical is available in the granular form in 1 lb. bags. Although it is a good oxidizer because 65 percent chlorine is delivered, it tends to get un-stabilized by sunlight. Moreover, it is potentially dangerous if it is not stored and handled properly since it reacts explosively with some chemicals.
Sodium Dichlor: This class 1 oxidizer is often referred to as just Dichlor. This means that it is relatively safe to handle. To ensure that the material stays stable even in sunlight, cyanuric acid is added to it when it is manufactured. On the flip side, it is not always convenient to use these through automatic feeders.
Sodium Trichlor: Experts suggest that the best swimming pool chemical for oxidizing a pool is Trichlor. Apart from providing 90 percent available chlorine, Trichlor is also suitable for automatic feeders. In fact the product is manufactured to work with feeders as dissolves properly only in flowing water. It is similar to Dichlor because it remains stable in sunlight.
Remember these things while purchasing swimming pool chemicals and you'll never end up buying something that is less useful.
