In medieval times, it was an important piece of the fireplace but nowadays it is mostly designed to give an artistic and ornamental aspect for any room. At first, fireplaces were used for heating and people needed the mantelpiece to catch the smoke but in time other forms of heating were invented so, at some point, fireplaces were built smaller and it is designed only for the artistic shape, meaning that its practical use is rarely met.

They designed special chimneypieces that had carved in their design different figures, sometimes even of real human size. In times, the design improved and at some point, even a family portrait was engraved in the mantel. Mantels can be built from several materials: wood, limestone and even marble depending on everyone's taste and vision. Of course, the best designs were made of marble and they are most appreciated. Some of the materials used before can not be found any more but all around the world designer try to come up with different ideas, designs and materials to built better and unique mantels. The person that designs and builds the mantel must be a visionary and must be a skilful person to prove that he can create a unique piece. Some models are kept simple but others use figures, vegetation, moldings and several other things when creating a mantel depending on the style of the room and the vision of the sculptor. Some people say that this is a true art and should be created an encyclopedia for it. The material is not the only important things when designing a mantel. Also, the style and refinement of the sculpture gives it the quality of a unique piece and that can highlight the aspect of the room where the mantel is built. The design of a perfect mantel can create a magnificent room.
