Things to know when you think about painting
How to prepare surface before painting?
Varied surfaces require different preparations to ensure that the paint adheres well and looks good for a long period of time. The importance of this process cannot be overlooked as any short coming may result in paint flaws, failures and imperfections. Careful consideration should be given not only to the type, nature and condition of the surface but also to its location (interior or exterior), exposure to the elements, cleaning, priming and drying between coats.
Metal Surface
Surface should be clean and free of rust, grease, oil and dirt. Any presence of the above elements prevents the paint from adhering to the surface. If rust is painted over, rusting continues under the paint till it finally breaks through and becomes visible. Use of a metal primer is essential to safeguard against this.
Exterior Walls
Any new surfaces should be cleaned and freed from efflorescence. Efflorescence occurs when water soluble salts appear on the surface of plaster causing paint to blister and bubble.
Interior Walls
Walls should be completely dry before priming.Cracks and holes are required to be filled,to ensure a uniform, even surface.Deep cracks must be opened up and widened, filled and patched before primer is applied. All Patchwork should be allowed to dry and throughly sanded and only then it should be primed.Patched spots tend to absorb more paint resulting in a blotched apperance.
Wood
Milled lumber is quite rough and requires sanding to eliminate minor defects. If the previous finish is worn out, chipped or peeling, the old layers should be completely removed. It has to be sanded, with the holes and knots scaled, then sanded again with a fine paper. After this, all the old wood dust has to be removed and the surface premed before it is painted.
Different types of paint finishes
Paint finishes can be broadly divided into five categories.
Flat /matte
Durable flat finish is especially good for camouflaging small bumps, cracks or other imperfections on the wall. Also because of its matte appearance, light is not reflected off the surface and any flaws get hidden.
Egg shell
Slight hint of shine or gloss, which holds up better when subjected to mild cleaning as compared to a flat finish.
Satin
Smooth with more gloss, it is often used for windows, doors, trims, ceilings and walls. This finish is particularly good for rooms that require regular cleaning and light scrubbing. For example, Kitchen, powder rooms etc.
Semi gloss
This finish has a nice, subtle shine and is easy to clean. It is best suited for doors, trims and cabinets in bathrooms and kitchen.
Glossy
High gloss paints have a reflective quality as they mimic the look of plastic or enamel. Not widely used in homes as it magnifies surface faults and imperfections.
