When you think about home security your mind likely automatically shoots to a home alarm system

. In many ways, you are correct in thinking that a good home alarm means good home security. However, there are other things you can do in your home to greatly increase the overall level of security your home receives. The steps have to do with the hardware you equip your home with.

Hardware can make your home safe against potential burglars. The hardware that you install on your doors and windows will strengthen those points of entry. It will make it less attractive to potential criminals. The hardware you place outside will also make your home less attractive to burglars. The idea is to make the home a little more intimidating so that the potential burglar doesnt even gain access into your home where the home alarm will then warn authorities.

First, the hardware you install inside your home will greatly improve the level of home security you experience. Remember the phrase locks and lights. That will be applicable whether you are equipping the homes interior or exterior with home security measures. Starting inside, go around your home and check the locks already in place at the windows and exterior doors. Are they strong? Could your outdated window or door use a little extra strength with more lock systems? It doesnt cost a whole lot to add a lock or two; and its something you can do in less than an hour depending on the complexity of the lock you purchase. Add extra dead bolts to the doors, choosing one that comes with an extra long bolt. You can also buy a door jam or window jam in order to keep it from being easily slid open.

Next, turn to the lighting in your home. The idea is to add timers on several lights randomly throughout your home. You want them to be timed and in several rooms so that it will give your home a lived-in look when you are away.

Second, your home security will be improved with hardware you install on your homes exterior. Starting with locks again, walk along your homes exterior and add locks to gates and fences in order to block access to the backyard. Most families keep more valuables laying in their backyard than they do in their front yard. Also add locks to sheds or garages that contain valuables you wish to protect.

Turning to lights, add lights above the garage and other key areas so as to provide lighting to an otherwise dark yard. Criminals do not like light because it can easily expose their activity, so adding lights outside that can be motion-detected will greatly increase the level of home security.

Together, the hardware will work to secure your home. After that, you can install the home security system that everyone knows greatly increases the likelihood that a burglar will pass by your home. Just remember, that security does not just include the alarm you choose. It goes beyond that and includes the locks and lights you place within and outside of your home.
