. Ditch the flannel and go for the cool cotton fabrics that define a great looking plaid men's shirt. So how can you pull it off without looking like you were just pulled out of the grunge era of the 1990s? Actually, it's easier than you think.

Unlike the flannel plaid shirts that looked better the more unkempt they were, the light cotton versions of contemporary day offer a closer fit, the preppy buttoned collar and vibrant colors. The collars are also shorter this season. Pair with sporty chinos and leather boat shoes and you're good to go.

It's all in the fit. Be sure your selection fits well across the shoulders, the arms (tip: a slimmer sleeve is what you're going for) and the length. Remember, it's about a neat look and that's only achieved with a shirt that's tucked in.

You're not a lumberjack so be sure the rest of your appearance follows the preppy trend and not so much the rugged path. A long sleeve is a must it looks great rolled up to the elbow. And if it's a tie you need to add, choose a solid color that matches the shirt for a crisp look that's both casual and professional.

Another great thing about plaid oxfords is their versatility. They work well with shorts, jeans and dressier pants and either with or without front pockets. Try wearing a plain tee underneath for a laid back appearance. Look for color combinations that include oranges, reds, shades of blue and even grey.

Finally, you'll want to choose quality fabrics from respected design labels. You'll be wearing this right on through the cooler months, so you want to get the best bang for your buck.
