As loving pet owners that we are, we like to spoil your furry four legged friends. Giving a couple table scrapes to our dog from the dining room table seems like a harmless thing to do considering the fact that we ourselves eat that food without any harmful side effects.
Well that's not always the case. Our bodies process certain foods a lot differently than those of our dogs and some food which might seem delicious treats to us can be dangerous to our dogs in large amounts, chocolate being a good example.
Just by looking through your pantry or cupboards, you are bound to discover at least two or three items which are harmful to your dog. This is why having childproof locks on easy to reach cupboards and leaving the doors closed is extremely important. Keeping those harmful foods safely locked away is the best way to prevent your dog from eating them.
Even some vegetables which are recommended to us by our doctors can cause your dog harm. For example, onions are toxic to dogs. While small amounts of onion won't cause your dog much harm, if they eat enough, they can develop hemolytic anemia.
Another vegetable which you should avoid giving to your dog is raw potato; this also includes the potato plant itself. Even though raw potatoes are dangerous for your dog, giving them fully cooked potatoes is just fine. It's only the raw potatoes that you should be worried about.
Delicious grapes can also cause a threat to your dog's wellbeing. Recent studies by the animal poison control showed that as few as seven digested grapes or raisins can be toxic to dogs.
These are just a few examples of what you shouldn't give your dog; there are many more foods which are perfectly safe for humans and dangerous for dogs so before you give your dog any table scrapes, make sure they are dog safe. If you are not sure if a certain food is safe to give to your dog, it's a good idea to phone your vet and ask for advice.
