Air compressors are not something you usually think about. That is, unless you are in the trades, are an avid do-it-yourselfer, a wood worker, a painter, a roofer, a contractor, or about a million other things. Basically, it is a subject that you might not think that big a deal until you realize that there's a good chance you use air compressors often, or at least occasionally. Having said that, lets take a closer look at these sneaky little buggers and find out what the deal is with them.

First of all, air compressors come in many different shapes and sizes. Whether large or small, they will do the job they were intended to do. That means that the lion's share of the responsibility for having an adequate model for your needs falls squarely on your shoulders. If you try to use a unit that is just too small for the job then the motor will be turning on way too often. This not only reduces the life span of the compressor, but will also drive you crazy when trying to use it. A little pancake-style air compressor is perfect for small jobs around the house, but is much too small for any tools that require more air. The larger units aren't really that much more money and will save you a lot of stress and frustration. Do yourself a favor and purchase the most air compressor you can afford. Trust me, you'll be glad you did.

Another thing about air compressors to consider is maintenance. Basic care involves things like keeping it adequately lubed and oiled. Wipe the thing down every once and awhile. Put it away when you are done. Keep the hose from getting crimped or otherwise damaged. I had the unfortunate occurrence one time of accidentally setting my circular saw down on the hose when the blade was winding down. This was due to me not paying attention to where things were and being impatient to set the saw down. I was able to splice the ruined hose together, but it was something I could have avoided all together. Every time I see that hose, with it's taped up splice, I am reminded to pay attention. Fortunately, air compressors don't really require much more than a little care to keep running for many years. Take care of the basics, and you should be good to go.

Finally, if you are in the market for air compressors then it is important to recognize that they come in both gas and electric configurations. The obvious benefit to a gas model is that it allows true portability, something essential to many people. It would take a ridiculously long electric cord to run from your house to the job site, right? Point made. On the other hand, being able to plug in and not have to deal with smelly, messy gasoline has it's obvious advantages as well.

Air compressors, large or small, portable or fixed, cheap or expensive, all serve the use for which they were designed. Give them a little care and they will last a long time.
