Thirunelli Temple is one of an ancient temples in Kerala

, the cultural state of South India. This temple is situated approx 32 kilometers from Mananthavadi, in Wayanad district (North Kerala). The nature has scattered its beauty everywhere around the temple. The temple is located in the lap of beautiful Brahmagiri hills and surrounded by the lush green forests. Also the temple is enriched by the holy river Papanasini that flows nearby it. It is believed that the river has divine power to dissolve sins of all the mortals.

Thirunelli Temple is also known as ''Sahyamala Kshetram'' and ''Kashi of South''. As per the legend the temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and it was constructed by Lord Brahma (the Creator). The temple is a fabulous example of ancient temple architecture. The temple is built of large patches of square granite slabs, splendid carvings on which have doubled the beauty of this ancient temple. The walls of the temple are enriched with ''Koothambalam'', which is one of the best and the rarest paintings of the state. The floor of the temple is made of huge granite blocks.

In the temple a two days festival is celebrated. In this festival various cultural art forms of Kerala as Ottanthullal and Kathakali are performed. This two days festival is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm. Apart from this fest many other festivals as Shivaratri, Chuttuvilakku, Navaratri, Puthari and Shree Krishnajanmashtami are also celebrated with great zeal. Another major attraction of the temple is the holy rock where people pray for their forefathers on the New Moon days of Malayalam months Karkkidakom, Thulam and Kumbham. In the west of Thirunelli temple there is a sacred cave temple of Lord Gundiga Shiva.

Thirunelli Temple is located in such superb natural surroundings that everybody feels completely relaxed after sitting in the sanctum of the temple. The climate of this place is also pretty cool and pleasant. A number of visitors and devotees come every year to visit this sacred temple.

Nearest Airport: Karipur International Airport at Kozhikode Road Transport: KSRTC buses connect Wayanad with all nearby stations, also Deluxe bus services are available from Bangalore, Chennai and Trivandrum upto Kozhikode.

Nearest Visiting Places: Edakkal Caves, Meenmutty Waterfalls, Soochipara Falls, Sentinel Rock Falls, Banasura Sagar Project, Seeta Lav Kush Temple, Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, Lakkidi and Chain Tree.
