This Cruise Brings You Extremely Close To Nature

The very last spot in South America leads to a massive body of water

. On the other side is the Antarctic continent. Drake's Passage is like a rite of passage one must endure to get to Antarctica. With terrible weather, colliding current streams and absolutely no land to calm the water, it is a rough 400 mile stretch. Other than penguins and icebergs, I had no idea what I would find. I hadn't done any research on Antarctica, so I didn't know what to expect. I didn't know any history or geography of the continent, and I certainly couldn't prepare myself for the land's majesty.

As we sailed to Antarctica, Drake's Passage didn't live up to its terrible reputation. However, the return trip provided more than enough thrills for even the most avid thrill seeker. My first morning in Antarctica was a calm one. The waters were gray when I woke up.

Our vie was hazy, and most of what we saw were brown, snow covered mountains - but soon enough, we beheld ice. Chunks of this ice bobbed in the gray sea like crystal marshmallows. Everyone is issued a bold, red expedition parka when they arrive. I threw mine on and secured my camera inside it before I dashed out into the brisk, heavy air.

We were treated to lectures and slides from the ship's naturalist, when we weren't rushing outside to see dolphins, whales or penguins. Excitedly, we debarked into a small rubber raft, seemingly unconcerned that we were leaving the larger ship behind and getting up close and personal with those floating chunks of ice. Not only could we see the rocky shoreline finally, but we saw several penguins at the water's edge, seemingly considering whether to go for a swim or not.

Penguins had completely surrounded us. Itty bitty little gentoo penguins were kind enough to share their little island in Paradise harbor with a group of researchers like us! The penguins made their way to the shore all over the island. Their movements purposeful and committed. A few of them stood on rocks watching these silly creatures in red point at them and grin. Because of their age, the majority of penguin chicks were now on their own. Some of the chicks were decidedly in denial about this. These adolescents are given down-covered sacks of krill. This is a kind of food that the parents will often bring back from the sea, regurgitating it into the chick's mouth to nourish them.

The chicks were all at various stages of molting. Much of their coats had become smooth. However, there were patches of gray down, mostly in places where the baby penguins couldn't reach to scratch off. This gave the illusion of earmuffs or a hat on the baby penguins. In some cases, it looked like a really bad haircut given by a beginner barber. As we floated back to the ship, we were able to near some of the bay's ice. Upon one such jagged, little mountain of ice that our driver took us past rested a lone majestic seal. He gave us a giant tongue-filled yawn; maybe he was telling us how boring we were to see.

The penguins immediately did their cutest trick. I guess it is the waddle and the gawkiness. The formal look of their feathers combined with the orange webbed feet The particular island they lived on was covered in rocks. There was little dirt to muddy up our penguins, so they maintained their very proper look. They appear to have chubby cheeks because of a thin black line under their chins.
