This Fall, Avoid Your "Annual Cold"

This Fall, Avoid Your "Annual Cold"

For those of us in Los Angleles, it feels like summer is over before it even began and the chill and rain of winter is already here! The more active, light, upward-and-outward energy of summer has halted and is moving us inward to prepare for winter's restorative hibernation.

Those tell-tale symptoms

For many of us, fall is that time of the year when we get our "annual cold". This makes perfect sense in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), as fall is the season that corresponds to our lungs and large intestine (colon). When we get sick, it usually begins in our nose, sinuses and/or throat and may turn into a nasty cough. That cough, whether we notice or not, affects our elimination. These are all functions of the respiratory system.

As you may have experienced a few weeks ago, sometimes during the fall season, we are blasted with an intense late summer, when the Santa Ana winds blow in from the eastern desert. For those of us who were already depleted from summer partying or life stress, or who have weak immune or respiratory systems year-round, these winds hit us particularly hard! You may have experienced symptoms like:

Sore throat

Dryness in the body (especially of the eyes, throat and skin)

Red, inflamed skin, rashes or breakouts

Coughing or asthma flare-up

Allergies (sneezing, runny eyes and nose, itching skin, ears or eyes)

Fatigue and dizziness

ALL of the above and more!

Avoiding the "annual cold"

Before you come down with a case of winter's chill, take advantage of the benefits of acupuncture and TCM to give your immune system a boost. The change of seasons is a wonderful time for a tune-up, helping your body prepare for the demands the upcoming season. If you are already experiencing cold or flu-like symptoms, it is especially important to receive a course of treatment as soon as possible, to ensure that you don't get worse or continue to get sick through the winter.

Stop the cold before it starts

Some tips for preventing your "annual cold" include:

Drink lots of water! We have alkaline, ionized water here at THAC to keep your body alkaline and uninhabitable for those jet-setting bugs

Eat alkalizing foods

Dry brush your skin daily before you shower

Visit our Sunlighten infrared sauna

Take advantage of fall's bountiful harvest by visiting your local farmers market to enjoy all of the colorful root vegetables that will strengthen your immune system for winter

Have fun!

Balance your activity and fun with just as much rest and relaxation
