As summer approaches, many people are looking for the best places to go on holiday. One online holiday provider is advertising flights from Luton airport to Marrakesh in Morocco, from just 101 in August.

The city of Marrakesh has a rich religious, historical and cultural heritage. For centuries it was known for its seven saints, which now draw in visitors from across the globe.

The city built itself in the 1960s and 70s with the help of roving hippies and spiritual seekers. Visits from the Rolling Stones, the Beatles and Led Zeppelin gave the city its present iconic status. It was then that the fashion crowd followed, with magazine editors and supermodels following in the footsteps of Yves St Laurent and John Paul Gaultier.

The city has since doubled in size, blamed on the boom of low-cost air travel, which lead to the city investing $2 million in its tourism infrastructure in 2007.

Marrakesh is most popular during spring and autumn, when it remains warmer than England usually is, but has cooler nights. In the summer, desert winds sweep through the city and temperatures can rise into the 30s and 40s.

The markets in Marrakesh are world renowned - it has one of the busiest squares in all of Africa, or even the world. The Djemaa el Fna is the market place in Marrakesh's medina quarter. It's equally used by tourists and locals. During the day, it's mainly juice stalls that sell in the markets, or snake charmers who pose for photographs with tourists. As the night draws in, the square becomes more crowded and dancing-boys, story-tellers and magicians appear. It becomes filled with food-stalls and really comes to life when the dark descends.

Often cited as the unmissable heart of Marrakesh, the Djemaa el Fna market offers food that will feed two people for less than 5 and is the perfect destination for those who want to visit cultural cities on a shoestring budget.
