Thoughtful Gift Giving Matters
Gift giving is a major part of almost every culture that exists and that has ever existed in human civilizations. You can go to the ends of the Earth to visit remote tribes and find gift giving happening in some form or another. Gift giving can signify ones respect or love for the person whom they are giving to, or how much the giver values the person's friendship.
It seems gift giving is a lot more meaningful than one would assume at first glance. With this in mind, why would anybody take such a thing lightly? How do you think it looks when you give, say, your significant other a gift with absolute no forethought whatsoever? Maybe something that you just chose at Wal-mart from your way home for work to get it out of the way, or worse, something from a gas station. It's not going to look good, I can tell you that. And how do you think the person receiving such a give would perceive your value for them?
If you are planning to give a gift to someone, do them the courtesy of putting some thought into it. Even if the gift you choose turns out to be something they don't even want, it really is the thought that counts; and people can usually tell if something was a thoughtful gift or just a I-feel-obligated-to-give-this gift.
Last Christmas my brother gave me two blockbuster DVDs(Finding Nemo and Marley & Me). Even though I thoroughly enjoyed the movies, I could tell this was not a "thoughtful" gift and was something he just picked up to get his Christmas shopping out of the way. But I forgive him, even though he is a terrible gift giver he is a fantastic brother.
My nephew on the other hand, blew me away with a homemade birdhouse. He knows I have a love for birds and bird watching and he not only put thought into it, but a lot of his time and effort. And although I will never use his death trap of a birdhouse for actual birds to use (sorry neph, you're just not much of a carpenter) I will cherish the gift for the rest of my life.
Point is, the gifts you give will say something about how you value the person you are giving to, whether intended or not. Take a little time out of your day to put some thought into the person you are giving to. Research the internet for unique gifts that may fit the personality of the person.
Maybe look into purchasing a figurine such as the Angel of Friendship to symbolize your friendship. Or perhaps, if you have the inclination, do what my nephew did and try to make something. Putting time and creativity into a gift shows, and lets that person know how much you care not to mention giving them incentive to give you an awesome gift when it's your turn!
