Thoughts From The Box- "Glancing at the Chief"

One blistering summer day I decided to work alongside my twin brother

, Julien, for Showcase Lawns and Gardens, our lawn care business. We started around 3 o'clock, which was later than a typical work day. However, in this, our first yard of the day, it began to drizzle.

Oddly enough I welcomed the soft drizzle because on this particular summer day, the heat was nothing less than sweltering. Now Julien is the Chief Executive Officer of this business, so I felt it was appropriate to just glance at him to see what his reaction would be to the light rain. I must tell you that Julien did not miss a beat. He continued working as if no raindrops were falling on our heads, so I guess I had to "follow the leader." The rain stopped and started continually for the next 30 minutes while we worked on the clients' bushes. But soon enough the sky opened up like an uncapped fire hydrant. "What should I do?" I wondered. But I trusted that Julien had been in this situation before, so I continued to rake the leaves that Julien had just clipped.

Feeling kind of goofy, and obviously soaking wet, I dropped my yard equipment, lifted my head, raised my arms to the sky, and began to sing my own rendition of one of Michael W. Smith's classic songs. "Let it Rain, Let it Rain! Open the flood gates of heaven. Let it Rain!" I screamed, repeating it a couple more times as icing on the cake. When I turned around, Julien was definitely not amused. He actually waved his arms repetitively, which I figured was sign language for, "hurry up boy." I could not stop laughing because Julien kept his shoulders shrugged as if the rain was going to miss him. We finally finished our separate cleanup responsibilities and high-tailed it to the truck, calling it a day.

Have you every continued to work when it began to rain? You know, most people run for cover and seek shelter in a rainstorm. But what about spiritual rain? What do you do when trials and tribulation come pouring into your life? I personally love what James 1:2, 3 encourages us to do when trials come our way. James says, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance."

Equally important is this: Did you notice why I didn't run for cover when it started to drizzle? The first thing I understood, and made up my mind about, was that I am not in control. Julien is the boss. He is the leader and I will follow his lead. And I am quickly learning that submission is by no means a sign of weakness. I believe that it (submission) is a sign of love and strength. I have learned not to try and rule my brother's gift because God gave it to him. And he does the same with my own business. This opens up great communication: We can talk and suggest things to enhance each other personally and professionally.

Secondly, before I acted a bit unprofessionally, I glanced at him to seek guidance on what he was doing to make sure we were on the same page. I believe this can be so profound in our personal lives. Julien must have just read Matthew 5:45 before we started to work because it answers many people's questions about why bad things begin to happen in their lives. It says: " He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous." Other biblical translations say the "just and unjust." While I don't believe that Julien and I were being rained on because we were being unjust on this day, I do believe we all can relate to the symbolism of unexpected rain falling on us in our personal circumstances.

I know tough times will touch all of us, but first we must fully submit to our heavenly Chief because He is ultimately in control. This opens up communication with God so He might lead us through those unpleasant times in life. I trusted Julien had gone through something like this before, and seeing him work through the rain gave me the confidence to do it myself.

God has already seen your future, so have confidence and faith to work and persevere through whatever you go through. Let me tell you a secret about the end: "You Win." So be encouraged my friends! Regularly glance at your heavenly Chief when it begins to rain because trust me He will continue to work through it all, just as Julien did.

Prayer,

God, today I fully submit to You and Your control. Please give me the strength to seek your face when trails and tribulations start coming my way. Continue to lead me and guide me along the path You have designed for my life. Amen.
