Thoughts on the TSA

The TSA has a critical job in ensuring the security of the transportation system. An important part of that responsibility involves the movement of cargo. If the supply chain system is penetrated by terrorists, the economy will suffer in unimaginable ways. If the security system put in place to protect it causes damage to the system, the effect can be the same. This article and the attached post discusses these issues.

It is important for us to understand that although the TSA is the government agency responsiblle for the security of our transportation system, we must not let them bear that burden alone. We all have a role to play in the security of our transportation system. Since we all rely on the global suppy chain for everything from ipods to automobiles, it is in our best self interest to play our role well.

We hear a lot of criticism of TSA, especially at the airport passenger screening checkpoints. What we hear less of are the security challenges in the Logistics field. This post offers some interesting insights and information on that part of TSA's mission.

One thing is sure. I would not want their job. When they do their job right and there are no security breaches, they receive silence or criticism of the process. When there is a problem, they get the blame. More importantly, there is a delicate balance between perfect security and keeping the world supply chain functioning. They must achieve high levels of security while not destroying the system they seek to protect. Not an easy job.

I believe that one of the most effective weapons against terrorism or any other threat to the logistics system is well informed and trained employees. People who will keep their eyes open and are encouraged to report anything that looks wrong to a supervisor present a formidable barrier to those trying to penetrate the supply chain. The employees put millions of eyes on the system and makes the terrorist's life very difficult. The burden is not all on the TSA. We all have a role to play in the security of the supply chain and our country.
