Thousands Of Couples Around The World Celebrated Destination Weddings On 11-11-11

Friday 11th November, 2011 saw thousands of couples get married as they flocked to registry offices

, churches and temples all around the world to tie the knot on this unique date.

Couples headed off to cities, beaches, hotels and resorts all over the world to celebrate their destination weddings on 11/11/11, from Shanghai to Cairo, and reportedly, to no one's surprise one city in the Unites States was particularly busy.

Las Vegas, renowned for its reputation as a hotspot for weddings abroad and last minute nuptials, last Friday saw an influx of couples rushing to get married on this special day.

On Thursday evening, the Clark County Clerks office in Las Vegas stayed open until midnight to accommodate all of the couples who were trying to obtain marriage licences in advance, with an average of two licences being handed out every minute.

Diana Alba, from Clark County Clerk, said: "That was like the granddaddy of all dates."

The Little White Wedding Chapel on the Las Vegas strip saw 100 brides and grooms get married on Friday including several married couples who renewed their wedding vows. Approximately 75 additional members of staff were brought in to cope with the large numbers and at 30 of the weddings an Elvis impersonator serenaded the newlyweds.

Owner and reverend of the chapel, Rev. Charlotte Richards, said: "We had 17 ministers, limousine drivers, greeters, videographers.

The largest chapel in the Las Vegas valley, Viva Las Vegas, averages around 300 weddings a month and last Friday saw 190 couples get married including 22 Elvis-themed weddings, three Blues Brothers weddings and a Camelot-themed ceremony.

Prior to the event, owner of the chapel, Brian Mills, said: "We're looking at the Super Bowl of weddings.

"Part of the thrill is that it'll be a day the couple won't forget - as in it will be easy to remember your anniversary."

According to Calgary numerologist, Vikki MacKinnon, the day was a "cosmic wake-up call."

"Eleven is a number of illumination and enlightenment, a number of insight, blinding flashes of the obvious, and a number of transformation," she explained.

While people from all over the world were busy getting married abroad in Las Vegas, Shanghai saw thousands of couples jam themselves into wedding halls or take part in matchmaking events in a bid to find love on this lucky day.

The celebrations of the lucky day carried over to Saturday in Shanghai as 10,000 single people took part in a huge "matchmaking emporium" in the Chinese city.

With the number of destination weddings on the rise, next year is also likely to see an influx of couples choosing to get married in an exotic location on the special date: 12/12/12.
