Three Common Pests That Infects Parsnips

Parsnips are easy to cultivate specifically because they don't require a lot of attention

. Aside from that, they are also extremely hardy. They are resistant to several diseases and not a lot of pests trouble them since they create their own natural pesticide called furanocumarins.

Hardy as they are, there are still a few pests that can't seem to resist the taste of this root plant. Examples of these pests are wire worms, carrot fly and aphids.

You would know that wire worms are attacking your parsnips once you notice small holes on the root. If you look closely, these holes have shiny, wiry jointed yellow larvae. They dwell on the soil therefore if you notice them there just before you began to plant, flood the soil to eliminate them. You can also remove parsnips plants which have been infected in order to avoid the proliferation of wire worms.

The carrot fly is small and slim. It's around forty-four millimeters long with a yellow green color. It is not really a typical parsnip pest because they choose to feed more on carrots, but once they do attack, they could still cause substantial damage.

Carrot flies are drawn by the smell of parsnips so it is useful to grow onions or garlic close by to push them away. To prevent them from attacking your parsnips, you can also use a fine mesh around your crops. Spraying foliar sprays on your parsnips and around the boundaries of your crops would also help.

When the leaves of your parsnips are turning yellow and distorted, its growth stunted, they are probably being attacked by aphids. This pest sucks out the sap of the leaves, stems and fruits, distorting the tissues in the process. This results in a leaf curl and the mentioned symptoms.

It is possible to treat affected crops by spraying them with soapy water or utilizing a hosepipe to remove them from the parsnips. Introducing predator insects like lady beetles would also help. If this doesn't get them under control, you can use chemical sprays as an alternative such as fenitrothion, malathion or menazon. Aphids have a period wherein they are inactive which is the best time to control them.
