Three Killed In Los Angeles Truck Accident

Three people were killed in a tragic truck accident in Los Angeles when a sports utility vehicle crashed into a tractor trailer

. According to news reports, the accident occurred on the 210 freeway in the early hours of Sunday. The sports utility vehicle rear ended the big rig, and immediately exploded into flames. A man, a woman and a 14-year-old boy in the SUV, died in the crash.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, by the time fire crews reached the scene of the crash, the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames. The three persons were burned to death. An 8-year-old and a 10-year-old were also traveling in the SUV. However, a witness at the scene of the accident, was able to rush to the car and pull the two children out. They have not suffered any serious injuries. The truck driver also complained of chest pain and was taken to the hospital.

This is a horrible tragedy for this family, and our hearts go out to the families of the couple and the little boy who lost their lives here. Every year, across the country, more than 5,000 people are killed in tractor trailer accidents. Many of these accidents are caused by truck driver negligence, trucker fatigue, intoxicated driving, and speeding. Maintenance of the truck may also be a factor in these crashes. Poorly maintained trucks with malfunctioning lights, brakes, tires and wheels increase the truck driver's chances of being involved in an accident.

In this particular accident, it may be worthwhile to investigate why the SUV driver was unable to stop his car in time to avoid the big rig. Very often, California product liability lawyers see that accidents are caused by defects in the vehicle, like malfunctioning brakes.

Trucking safety advocates and California truck accident lawyers are strong champions of enhanced truck safety. While these groups do their bit to force trucking companies to be more accountable and hold them responsible for accidents, motorists in general can do a lot to drive safely around big rigs.

Always maintain safe speeds when you are driving around a tractor trailer. If you are driving behind a rig, it can be easy to become impatient because of the lumbering mass of steel ahead of you. But, it doesn't pay to be in a hurry when you are driving behind a large truck.

Keep sufficient distance between your car and an 18 wheeler in front of you.

If you are trying to pass a tractor trailer, remember that these vehicles can measure up to 57 feet in length. Before you try to pass a rig, make sure that the lane is safe enough to pass safely.

Never try to race or wrongly overtake a big rig.

If you are traveling in front of a truck, remember that the big rig behind you can weigh up to 80,000 pounds, and will not be able stop in time to avoid hitting you if you suddenly apply the brakes.

It's always best to remember that in 80 percent of accidents involving 18 wheelers, it's the occupants of the other vehicle that have the highest chances of being killed or seriously injured.
