Three Reasons Why Learning About Your Native Tongue Can Prove To Be Quite Beneficial To You
If you come from a family that had migrated away from their native country
, there's a pretty good chance that you might not be able to understand your own language very well. After all, it's quite understandable that your knowledge of your own language wouldn't be as good as that of your parents; you were probably raised up to speak in English a whole lot so that you could blend in more easily in public. Your ability to speak English could determine your chances of how well you could get through school, or find a job, or even get a girlfriend in a country where English is spoken in almost every nook and cranny. However, that doesn't mean that you should forget about your own native tongue. Why? There are a lot of reasons why you should still be able to speak in your native language; perhaps a few of these could help you answer that question.
It will help you remember who you are and where you came from
It is easy for someone to forget who he really is especially when he is gone to live in some foreign country. Imagine how hard it must even be if you are a son a daughter of an immigrant family. Knowing how to speak in your native tongue can help you remember where you come from and who you really are. It is a shame when someone does not acknowledge his origins, do not ever forget who you are and where you come from. If knowing how to a speak your native language can somehow keep you connected to your own culture, then go ahead and go for it.
When your family decides to visit your home country and they bring you along with them, make sure you know how to speak in your native language so you would not feel alienated.
There is a pretty good chance that people in your home town are not that really good at speaking English, think about it, if you are from an oriental descent, you should especially learn your native language. It sucks not being able to talk so well to someone, and on another note, when you visit you're home country you should feel at home; not an outsider. Being able to speak fluently in your native tongue would also make your parents and your other relatives happy.
You can socialize with people of your nationality a whole lot better
Somehow, its just really different if you mingle with your friends in English or in your own native tongue. People of the same nationality usually stick together one they get to the states; wouldn't you want to have something that binds all of you together? Something that connects all of you and something that separates you from the rest? Sometimes, we don't always have to fit in to the majority, we can stick to our own ethnicity. Being part of a minority group is pretty cool you know; be proud of it.
