Three Root Causes Of Oppositional Behaviour

When you attempt to handle the oppositional behavior by itself

, you are not treating the problem - you're treating the symptom. Oppositional behavior might be what you see as the problem, but for your kid it's a totally different problem that causes it.

The most important aspect of the problem is your child's own ability to gauge social environments and to calibrate the feelings and emotions of the people around him. If your kid does not "get" the way others feel, then it's easy to make a mistake such as saying or doing the wrong thing. Without that skill of reading social situations, it's difficult to understand what the right thing to do is.

Another element of this, which fits in with the above point, is your child's skill in being able to identify and control his emotions. Sometimes kids see lashing out as their only way to deal with anger. Sometimes it seems pointless to respond rationally when the other person is angry and lashing out. If they are already lashing out it hardly seems to matter. When you mix oppositional behavior with this kind of thinking, it becomes an automatic result.

The third thing that affects oppositional behavior is the child's understanding of problem solving. When your child faces a situation where a choice has to be made, sometimes it is hard to know which is the right choice. If your child doesn't have basic problem solving skills, then what happens is all of the choices seem equally good or bad. Then the child will just pick one of them, not knowing which is really best.


After developing these skills, a kid is able to quickly realize that he has a choice in how he behaves when dealing with a social situation. Knowing how to deal with his emotions can really help him to avoid the frustrating and confusing feelings that he'd otherwise develop when dealing with someone else and their emotions. Then, his problem solving skills can kick in.

By understanding these three skills yourself, the situation can become markedly better. Many parents find that they spend much of their time looking angry or upset, and the child feels like the cause of this emotion. By simply expressing the target of your emotions, you can relieve this stress and anxiety for your child, and oppositional behaviour is likely to decrease or stop altogether.

And armed with these skills, your own life will improve, as well as your child's.
