Three Simple Steps To Better Golf

This may be a more than unusual article for golf tips for most of you

. Or it may simply not be what you expected. This is not about how to fix a slice or how to hit the golf ball an extra fifty to seventy five yards. This article will really focus on what I have found to be the three biggest problems for most amateur golfers. And if you take these tips to heart, I promise your golf game will improve.

I am not going to focus at all on the mechanics of the golf swing in this article. So how will these golf tips help you? Well, sit back and get ready to improve your game.

The first problem (and probably the number one for most high handicap amateur golfers) is tempo. I have written about tempo in the golf swing many times in my blog and in my training books. It is so critical. Let me give you a perspective on why tempo is so important to this particular group.

The golf swing, in general, is a pretty complicated athletic movement. I don't think that most of us appreciate the athleticism and hand to eye coordination required at the professional level of this sport. But if you have ever taken lessons, you probably have an appreciation for the complexity of the golf swing.

Now tempo affects the mechanics of this complex movement in a big way. For most of us amateur golfers, this means the faster we swing, it becomes exponentially harder to get the clubface and the golf club itself into the right position to hit the golf ball solidly and straight.

So, swing eaaaaaasy. It's hard to do but the results are huge.

The second problem? It is trying to play above our ability. Like going for that impossible par 5 in two because everyone else in our foursome is and are calling us wimpy for laying up. That is just one example, but you know what I am talking about. I have seen anywhere from a 2 stroke to an 8 or 9 stroke difference in one round of playing within ourselves. In other words, play our game that we are capable of. Take the shots you can make.

The third area is related to the second but is really the bigger picture. Playing within our ability is one component of the mental side of golf. And the mental game is something that can be a huge challenge for average golfers like all of us. Part of it is forgetting a bad shot so that we can play the next one. They say that quarterbacks must have a short memory so that they forget interceptions quickly.

Golfers must be the same way or you will compound a bad shot by adding two or three more behind it. Another component of mental golf is not focusing on the dangers (sand traps, hazards, etc.). Too often, we begin our swing and the last thought is "Oh I hope I don't hit it towards the bunker!". Well, guess what? You know the end of that story.

In conclusion, if amateur golfers, particularly high handicappers, will focus on these three areas, you will see strokes come off your scores. Good luck out there!
