Three Tips For Keeping Summer Pests Away

Summer means picnics, fireworks, swimming pools

, barbecues, camping trips and just plain family fun in the great outdoors! Unfortunately, the season also brings with it some unwanted guests: insects and other pesky pests. Although most of these visitors are simply annoying, others can be downright dangerous to both home and family. Here are three quick tips for keeping some of the most common ones at bay around your house.

Mosquitoes: A popular saying today goes something like this: "Wouldn't it be nice if mosquitoes sucked fat instead of blood?" Wishful thinking! Mosquitoes like nothing better than to land on your arm and feast away, and depending on where you live these pesky insects can be either tiny or roughly the diameter of a golf ball! Standing water is where they like to hang out, so the best thing you can do to keep them under control is to eliminate their breeding areas. Change the water in kiddie pools or bird baths daily and sweep out any rain puddles after every summer shower. West Nile Virus carried by mosquitoes is a very real threat: make sure to use personal repellent products when outdoors.

Ants: They'll march through your house all summer long looking for food or water or trying to escape heat and rain. Make sure to caulk or seal cracks, crevices and small holes between your outdoor and indoor living spaces. Also, never leave food out on countertops or leave crumbs on the floor anywhere in the house. Ants do love sweets! Don't make it easy for these pests to get what they're looking for.

Wasps and Hornets: Unlike our friends the honey bees, wasps and hornets are ill-tempered and aggressive little buggers. Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot homeowners can do to prevent their building nests under eaves or in trees. Just keep a sharp eye out for nests, and then call a professional to take care of the problem for you. Too many people are seriously injured or killed by trying to take on these nasty insects themselves!

Bottom line: Although there are a lot of measures you can take yourself to remediate your pest problem, it is wise to bring in the professionals at least twice a year in order to keep your family and property safer.
