However, knowing the basics about the three main types of cooling systems can help them make the right decision in cooling their house.

The first, which many people are familiar with, is central air. This type has an indoor and outdoor piece to it. The compressor and other key parts are housed in a casing outdoors. They are responsible for making the indoor unit blow out the necessary cool air. Ducts lead away from the part that is located inside the house. These are usually installed through the ceiling. The ducts lead to a vent in a room of the house and blow the cold air through it to keep the house at the desired temperature (which can be adjusted using the thermostat). This type of cooling system is best used in places that have a hot climate, like the southern and mid-western regions of the United States. Other available options would not work well in this climate. Generally, they are too small and will be unable to adequately cool down the house. However, many of the other options may be used in conjunction with a central unit in case the homeowner wants to keep certain rooms cooler than others.

In a home in a cooler region of the United States, a window unit or two may be all that is needed. These are used to keep the room in which they are installed at a set, desired temperature. They work much the same way as a central unit does but are only one piece and are unable to cool down a large area. These work great in mountainous areas that are naturally cool during the evening, night, and early morning. Having them in the few main rooms that are frequented during the day can keep the occupants comfortable and happy.

Split or ductless air conditioners are similar to window units. They are generally found in hotels, motels, or apartment buildings. However, they can also work well in a home that is in a mild climate. They are more powerful than a window unit and are able to cool a larger space. However, the doors must be kept open in order for the air to flow correctly throughout the other rooms.

Many people spend money on traditional air conditioners when it is not always a necessity. There are several options available and, depending upon the cooling needs in the home, some may work just as efficiently. In today's tough economy no one wants to spend extra dollars where they do not have to. Knowing the options available can help a customer make the most informed and cost-efficient decision available.
