Utilizing a variety of methods, three-dimensional modeling merges the real and virtual worlds

X-ray computed tomography (CT) scanning, laser scanning and coordinate measuring machines (CMM) are all methods used to build a mathematical 3D model of a solid object for manipulation by an information system. These digital methods vary and are divided into two types: active and passive scanners.

Active scanners use some type of direct measurement to determine the 3D characteristics of the object and include contact and non-contact schemes. A coordinate measuring machine, or CMM, is used in manufacturing and often very precise. Its accuracy comes at a cost however, as the machine must make contact with the device, which may result in altering or damaging the device. The process is also among the slowest.

Non-contact active scanners use some type of radiation or light to produce their image. A time of flight device, such as a laser range-finder or a conoscopic holograph use lasers to determine the spatial dimensions of the objection. Scanning is much faster and produce extremely accurate results. Other types of three-dimensional modeling, used primarily in the medical and aeronautical industries, use computed tomography (CT) or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technology to produce 3D models that peer inside the object.

3D laser scanning services are becoming popular for computer aided design and computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM). Fast and highly accurate, 3D laser scanning services allow for rapid duplication of broken or out of production parts, and can greatly speed up the design process. Inexpensive equipment can allow even the hobbyist to perform their own 3D laser scanning.
