Throwing A Fundraiser

With economic forces waxing and waning we never know how our economy is going to look tomorrow

. It is a common practice for schools in both the public and private sectors to adopt fundraising practices in an effort to pick up where government funding (in the case of public schools) and parental funding (in the case of private schools) leave off. Fundraisers are regularly used to raise money for extracurricular clubs, sports teams, music and art programs and even school field trips and can bring in a large budget for whatever your schools needs are.

Some of the more popular fundraising ideas for schools include direct and door-to-door sales, raffles and work bees. Schools commonly hold garage sales, student artwork sales, flower sales, coupon book sales, and Tupperware sales. You have probably encountered students at your door or at your local supermarket offering discount cards, chocolate, candles, toys, or baked goods. Some of the more popular raffles offer gift baskets, restaurant and gift cards, calendars and holiday gifts. Work bees can include cleaning the school grounds, offering services to the neighborhood and car washes and parents often get directly involved.

Direct sales offer the advantage of giving the donors the satisfaction of giving while providing them with a form of physical reimbursement, but raffles have advantages as well. Raffles offer only one or a few main prizes, but because the prizes are few there is potential to make a lot of money depending mostly on how well students sell raffle tickets. Work bees offer services provided by students that are paid for by donors. A car wash, for example, has a few costs, such as water, soap and rags but has the potential to bring in a fair amount of money in return.

Depending on how quickly a school wants to put on their fundraiser they might be prevented from selling a product such as candy or holiday gifts, which can be a several month long selling process. A raffle is much quicker and the prizes can be purchased at the last minute after funds have already come in if it cannot be donated. Still it can take a few weeks or so to sell the proper amount of raffle tickets. For a quick fundraiser, work bees are often the best. Students and families can do advertising for a work bee quickly and the work itself can be done anytime after school or on weekends, as soon as there are people responding with a need for work. A car wash can be advertised with handmade signs on the street side and is probably the fundraiser with the quickest turn around. It requires only willing supervisors and a team of students willing to work and get a little wet. The most difficult hurdle for the car wash might be getting students to show up to work on a weekend.

Whatever kind of fundraiser you choose, make sure to weigh your costs against what you expect to make. Bringing in money is the first step, but bringing in as much as possible as quickly as possible should be your main goal. Figure out how quickly your school needs money and how much before you plan your approach and weigh the benefits of each approach before choosing what your best approach to fundraising will be. As a final piece of advice, dont be afraid to fail. Trying a certain fundraising approach and realizing it will not be successful for your institution will give you an insight into what might work for you and your students the next time and you will be able to better attack your fundraising campaign in the future.
