Radioactive Iodine Radioactive Iodine is given orally on a one-time basis to ablate (destroy) thyroid cells. Permanent hypothyroidism is the major complication of this treatment and can result in needing life-long thyroid replacement therapy.

Hypothyroidism is caused by the thyroid gland under producing thyroid hormone. The most common form of treatment by physicians for hypothyroidism is hormone replacement therapy.
